Keyword research refers to an action taken to have a long list of keywords you are expecting to rank for.

Keyword strategy refers to different decisions you need to make concerning the keyword research.

Key phrases only refer to keywords made up of multiple words. Although the word “keyword” is frequently used, it does not have to be a single word. Keywords can contain more than one or two words, such as ‘WordPress SEO’  or  ‘Google Analytics plugin’.

What makes keyword research important?

When keyword research is done properly, you will have an idea of the search terms your audience uses in arriving at your website. Why is this important?  The real benefit can be enjoyed by optimizing for words that people use.  By doing a proper keyword research, you can position yourself to use the phrase commonly used by your target audience. When this is done, you would have successfully covered lots of gap in optimizing your website.

Executing keyword research

We have come to understand that there are three steps to result- guaranteed keyword research. Start by writing down your business’ mission.  Proceed by making a list of all the keywords for which you want to be found.  Your final step here should be the creation of landing pages for all keywords. Our plan here is to take your hand and guide you through these steps, one after the other.

Step 1:

The first thing you should consider is your mission.  Ask yourself, who are you? What exactly does your website do? Why is it special? What is your site promising a visitor?

Not many people will find these questions easy to answer.  This is why there has to be that ‘one thing’ that makes you outstanding.  Try not to be in too much hurry to respond these questions. Take a piece of paper and write down your mission.

Step 2:

Proceed to step two by creating a list of keywords.  This stage in the execution of keyword research should focus on getting the full attention of your potential buyers. Have your mission fully in mind, and then think about what they will be looking for? Then think about the kind of search terms they could use in arriving at what you are selling!  Once you have asked yourself these questions, write down your answers.

Your mission has to be clear. It is the only way you can have a clear image of your niche as well as your unique and distinguishing selling points. These terms are the ones you want to be found for.

Your Effective Tools

If it were some years ago, you could easily have made a list of possible search terms. Back then, keyword research was much easier. A quick Google Analytics check would have shown you the words people used in finding your website. Sadly, this has changed. The good news, however, is that some other tools are available to help in carrying out your keyword research.  You may start from Google Keyword Planner.  Personally, I like to use combination of mix of tools like Google Keyword Planner, Long Tail Pro, Semrush and Google trends.

Step 3:

Now, to step three.  For a successful long-term keyword strategy, you need to create great landing pages for all the keywords you desire to be found for. A little advice here makes a well-outlined structure.  Draw a table, and begin to fix in the list of keywords you have done.  Google Docs /Sheets or instance Excel can be helpful.  Using a table ensures that you set up a format in preparation for a landing page for all the search terms that come to your mind.  Create separate columns. The first is for the search terms. Then proceed to put different levels of your site’s structure in additional columns.

When your keyword research is completed, it should be clear to you the terms people use, as well as the terms you want the pages on your site to be found for. This clear mindset should guide you in the content you put on your website.

Long -term keyword strategy

It is imprudent for any website to rely on a single keyword or key phrase to drive traffic. Using your mission as step one, follow the three steps we highlighted as essential to conducting  proper keyword research and, move towards keyword strategy which is a sure foundation. Now, this section of our ultimate guide is about the importance of having a long-term keyword strategy.

How many keywords?

We cannot specifically suggest you an exact number of keywords to focus on, but this does not mean it has to be difficult. Have a large number, maybe not exactly 1000 keywords, but just enough keywords you can manage.

Your business is probably small, but it does not mean you cannot have a couple of hundred keywords, even though all the pages do not have to be ready all at once. With an excellent Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress n your side, you can make content addition a step by step thing.  Identify the particular keywords you would like to rank for at the moment, and the ones that can still take a back seat.  Create content on this plan.

Why is long tail keyword strategy important?

What exactly makes long tail keywords an important part of your long term keyword research strategy? Long tail keywords refer to keywords and key phrases, more accurate and usually a little longer than the commons “head” keywords.  With long tail keywords, you get less search traffic but generally, a higher conversion value. This is because they focus specifically more on a particular topic or product.

Finally on keyword research

Keyword research should kick-start any sustainable SEO strategy. Keyword research will provide you an extensive list of keywords for which you desire being found for. This brings us straight to the toughest part, which is content writing.
